Government plans to ban disposable plastic tableware in restaurants as early as the fourth quarter of next year
The Government plans to advance the implementation of the measure to ban the provision of disposable plastic tableware in restaurants from 2025 to the fourth quarter of next year at the earliest.
The measures will be implemented in two phases. at the beginning of the first phase, restaurants will be prohibited from providing styrofoam tableware, plastic drinking pipes, plastic mixing sticks, plastic knives, forks, spoons and plates. As for plastic cups, in view of the limited number of alternatives available in the market, restaurants will first be prohibited from providing to restaurant customers in the first stage, and only in the second phase of 2025 will they be banned to restaurant and takeout customers. Offenders are liable to a fixed penalty of $2000.
In addition, the Bureau proposes to ban the manufacture, sale or free distribution of disposable plastic products in phases as soon as the fourth quarter of next year. The products under the first phase of control include hotel toiletries, such as plastic handle toothbrushes, combs, water filled plastic bottles provided in rooms, disposable umbrella bags, balloon sticks for parties, inflatable sticks, glow sticks, and so on. Disposable plastic products that are manufactured, sold or distributed free of charge in stage V include tablecloths, transparent non-medical gloves and dental floss sticks.
