The global chip shortage now seems to have spread to high-end chips. Production problems such as technical hurdles and a shortage of manufacturing equipment are affecting the ability of two high-end chipmakers, TSM.US and Samsung Electronics, to deliver on their promises to customers.
In the global chip shortage crisis of the past two years, high-end chips have been largely unaffected. However, that is now changing. Handel Jones, chief executive of chip consultancy International Business Strategies, has warned that high-end chips could be in short supply of 10 per cent of Murray's 20 per cent by 2024 to 2025. The shortage of high-end chips may hinder the application and development of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies.
On the one hand, due to the shortage of supply, the delivery time of chip manufacturing equipment is more and more behind expectations. It is reported that the delivery time of new orders for chip manufacturing equipment has been extended to two to three years in some cases. TSMC's production expansion in 2023 and 2024 will not be able to meet expectations due to the procurement of chip manufacturing equipment, according to people familiar with the matter.
