Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency; White House Says Condition Is ‘Benign’; Hand Bruise Due to Frequent Handshakes

The White House on Thursday (17 July) took the unusual step of releasing President Trump’s latest medical report, confirming that the 79-year-old has mild swelling in both legs caused by chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). At a press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt quoted a letter from the President’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbarbera, stressing that the symptoms are “benign and common.” Ultrasound screening has ruled out deep-vein thrombosis and arterial disease, and found no signs of heart or kidney failure.

Leavitt also addressed recent photos showing bruising on Mr. Trump’s right hand, saying it stemmed from “days of frequent handshakes, compounded by his long-term use of low-dose aspirin for cardiovascular protection,” not an injury or anything more serious. The physician noted that the president is pain-free and continues his regular work and campaign schedule.

Renewed Scrutiny over Health Transparency

Images of the president’s swollen ankles and discoloured hand have circulated on social media in recent days, fuelling speculation about his health. The Trump team has long insisted he is “full of energy”; this proactive disclosure is seen as an effort to address public concern and blunt future attacks from rivals on the issues of age and health.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Medical specialists describe CVI as an age-related degeneration of leg-vein valves that impedes blood from returning to the heart. Typical manifestations include swelling, heaviness, or superficial varicose veins. U.S. vascular surgeon Dr. Amanqua notes that the condition is usually well managed with compression stockings, leg elevation and weight control, but if left untreated it can progress to dermatitis or chronic lower-leg ulcers.

Limited Impact on the Race

Mr. Trump was declared “fully fit for duty” after a comprehensive physical earlier this year. Republican insiders therefore expect this mild diagnosis to leave his electoral momentum intact. On the contrary, the White House’s swift release of details aims to project a “candid and healthy” image and to contrast with former president Joe Biden’s withdrawal last year amid health concerns.

At the time of publication, Mr. Trump had posted on Truth Social that “All good, thanks for your concern,” attaching a photo of himself signing legislation in the Oval Office—apparently underscoring that his physical condition poses no hindrance.
